TRIP TO LUGANO – SWITZERLAND with boat & bus FROM BELLAGIO -LAKE COMO – ITALY

If you’ll feel to try a little adventure on the italian public transport I can suggest a nice one on the elegant city of Lugano.

A nice day trip into Switzerland to visit this lovevly town on the north shore of Lake Lugano. Take the ferry from Bellagoio to Menaggio which drops you off in front of the Grand Hotel Menaggio. Walk west past (or through) the hotel, and take a right (north) onto the first street.

Centro Lugano

Walk four or five blocks until you come to a newspaper stand on the corner, and buy a bus ticket there. Continue north on the same street past the church until you see a bus stop on the block further on the same side of the street as the church. Take the C12 bus to Lugano – bring your passport – and enjoy the stunning scenery. The bus trip is just over an hour. The bus deposits you on the “Campo Mars” – walk about seven blocks west along the lake to the Historic Centre – lovely, charming, lots of good food and shopping.

My Bellagio centre – a visit to the Borgo

From the chronicles we know that the town of Bellagio, from most ancient times, was surrounded by walls and protected by the castle above it.

From as early as the twelfth century, the borgo (the centerpice ) of Bellagio comprised an area approximately two hundred meters along the shore and a hundred and fifty meters uo the promontory, with walls on the south and north. The southern wall had a gate, today the entry at the Hotel Genazzini Metropole, which admitted traavellers from a road along the shore frommSan Giovanni and Loppia. From this point ascends the Salita Serbelloni where innolden times was a defense ditch ouside the wall.

On the left, about half way up, stonework remains which may well have been the wall itself.

On the right, in mediaeval times, would have been open country with the gardens and buidings of the monastery adjacent to the survivving Romanesque church of San Giacomo.

At the top of the Salita, the modern railing along the Via Garibaldi marks the site of an ancient draw-bridge;

The place is still called locally “il ponte”.

Tourning left on the Via Garibaldi at his point you are at the site of the upper southern gate, which admitted travellers from Lecco and Asso roads.

Frescoes of sacred scenes were usually placed at such town gates; you will see one here on the house at the right.

Proceeding on the Via Garibaldi, you are in a section that enables you to recapture some of the feeling of the borgo in earlier times.

Indeed, it is probable that wall ines have not altered here for many centuries.

To the left you pass the Via della Musica in which two fine stone doorways mark the building that was the feudal prefecture of Bellagio before fiefs wew abolished in Napoleonic times.

To the right , narrow lanes run up to the precipitous abutments of the Castello.

On lane to the right, the Via Stanga, named for Marchesino Stanga , the owner of the Castello in the late fifteenth century, may have been a means of access to it.

Continuing north, you aome to the Piazza San Giacomo and the imposing Romanesque church of that name. As you enter the square , you see at the right a mediaeval towe which was undoubtedly a fortified entrance to the castle area.

Before the construction of the church of San Giacomo, which is dated between 1125 and 1150, the towe that later bacame its campanile was a defense towe of the town wall at its northern extremity.

The church seems to have retained its original dorm until the end of the sixteenth century, when Bishop Feliciano Ninguarda of Como visited and described it.

At that time it was directly dependent on the Arch-presbyterate of San Giovanni, but 1657 it became an independent prevostura, and at about the same time it was subjected to alterations in Baroque style until, in 1902, as a result of the enlightened efforts of Carlo Grandi, Prevosto of Sant’Agata in Como, a native of Bellagio, a campain to restore in the church to its pristine state was successfully carried out.

If you wish to learn more about the San Giacomo church keep reading the articles about it.

It has a central nave and two side aisles ending in three half-dome apses. Each of which is immediately preceded by a groin-vaulted bay.

The masonry coumns that support the aeches dividing the aisles from the nave are constructed of black marble from Varenna on the lake’s eastern shore.

The main body of the church is built of the fine stone from Moltrasio on the western shore that is used in many of the Romanesque churches built around the lake between 1000 and 1200.

On the left, just within the western entrance, is a modern baptismal font. Further on in the left aisle is a fine painting attribuited to Perugino: “The Deposition

Villa Balbianello – Lake Como Italy

This i s absolutly one of my favorites  Villa in Como Lake – Italy .

Is situated at the end of the promomtory of Lavedo, which comes out of the town of Lenno. Sometimes the Villa can also be reached on foot from the town (approximatly 45 minutes of walk from the boat station office  of Lenno). However the best way to approach this , Villa from Belalgio  is the boat.

You can visit the Villa and the park with a guided tour .

The spectacular and meticulously well-kept gardens are of botanicals interest and will cenrtainly provide the ideal setting for your best holiday snap here on the lake of Como. The Villa’s interiors are really unique; they also include a small personal museum of the last owner, Count Gido Monzino, a keen explrer and collector of rare objects.

Since 1988 , the Villa has been owned by the Italian equivqlent of National Trus , FAI .

Villa Serbelloni Rockefeller Fundation – Bellagio, Lake Como Italy

How much more picturesque the spur of Bellagio must have been when the summit of the hill was crowned by walls and towers, and its fortress menacingly dominated the placid panorama of the central lake .

cit. Gianfranco Miglio

After having climbed a stairway with broad steps, a black and white house …it is a General Serbelloni Villa .

A view of three lakes a spectacle expressly created for the pleasure of the eyes. At the top of the stairs , as you pass between two gateposts, you enter the area which for centuries was known as Castello di Bellagio. A stone wall ran from the small house at your righgt, which was one of its tower, northward and uphill to the summit of the promontory.

The guide will lead you above the entrance court of the villa and down a path to its eastern terrace, from which you have a splendid view of the Como and Lecco arms of the lake and of the interventing penisula as far south as the ridge of Monte San Primo, which marks the southern boundary of the commune of Bellagio.

This terrace is thought to be the site of the Villa Tragedia of Pliny the Younger.

In the immediatee foreground below , you see formal gardens , designed in the 1930’s after Pliny’s descriptions of his gardens: little color, flower for fragrance, box cut into fanciful shapes, and clipped yews.

Below the gardens are the olive groves and the other buildings of the Villa Serbelloni property.

Fist, on the left, the Maranese  , named for thrfamily that owned this section of the land in the fiftheenth century,. Further down, in the center, the red buildingngs of the former Capuchin monastery, built by Duke Ercole Sfondrati in the year 1609  to house fourteen friars.

The yellow buildings on the shore of Lecco arm of the lake are called the Sfondrata houses. They were constructed in the 1590’s by Ercole for his brother, Cardinal Paolo Camillo Sfondrati.

The history of the Villa Serbelloni can be reconstructed from both archeological and documentary evidence. With the exeption of one of the pre-Roman basinstones, mentioned in the Historical Outline and to be seen later on this tours, the earlieer archeological eviddence of habitation on the promontory of Bellagio is a quality of Roman roof  tile found in the fill of the terrace on which you are standing. Supplementing this is a Roman votive altar of the first or second century AD, known to have been on the propertyin the nineteenth century and rediscovered on this terrace a few years ago. It now stands in the grotto at the eastern end of the terrace. Its inscription states that two gentlemen of the Justus family freely and duly fulfilled a vow they had made to Jove:

I O M

FORTUNATUS JUSTUS

VENTURUS JUSTUS

V S L M

Much more there is  to write, to say and to see about this incredible place.

I  invite you to find same time to join the guided visit that will give you the possibility to appreciate the spelndid view from eight-century gardens of the branches of the lake of Como and Lecco.

From the fortifications on the ppromontory, view of the northern branch of the lake and the alps.
